Well if have not the union has drawn a line in the sand and given the big three Albertsons, Safeway, and Ralf’s that form the majority of the southern California market have not agree to remove the two level wage system that was forced on southern California workers after the disastrous strike of 2003. The big three are proposing a three level wages system with no pay increase for the employees and a benefit decrease. Now after several contract extensions and seven months of completely unproductive negotiations the Southern California local unions and our larger organization the UFCW have with drawn from negotiations and have left the bargaining table after the insulting offer that they presented to the union members. This is reminiscent of the work stoppage that the big three caused in 2003 that put 60,000 UFCW members on picket lines for nearly five months and disrupted shoppers and communities throughout the region in there attempt to break the union though causing financial difficulty to the individual members. Once again, I have provided my background materials to this journal posting at the end of the journal. The first of my sources is the United Food and Commercial Workers union web site at http://www.ufcw.org/press_room/index.cfm?pressReleaseID=312 . <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The Albertsons grocery stores collective bargaining contract with the United Food and Commercial Workers union is coming up for renegotiation. The UFCW representatives for Albertsons grocery workers have held a strike-enabling vote that will allow the union to declare a strike if there is no new contract on the April 9. Because of the fact that Albertsons, Safeway, and Ralf’s the big three form a oligarchy in the southern California grocery industry a strike at Albertsons would result in a lock out of Safeway workers in California such as Vons, and Safeway stores. Albertsons, Safeway, and Ralf’s, are trying to bargain as a group like they have done in the past. also if they can not bargain as a group then they will try to negotiate individually with each of the union locals. They are attempting to split the barring into 21 separate talks to dilute the larger colective bargaining power of the union. Because all of the major grocer chain are part of the oligarchy the union has almost identical contracts will each company so that the problems of one of the companies is closely related to the problems of the others. The current contract has built into it a dual pay and benefits scale that pays lower wages to the new employees and forces use to wait longer to qualify for health insurance. The old hand employees that were hired before the strike all held on to their wages and most of their health benefits. over half of the grocer store market in southern californai is controled by the big three with Stater Bros and Gelson's which the union has already negotiationed with to remove the dual pay scale only making up 12-15% of market. to confirm this information i have added refence material form some of my back ground sources. the first is form the United Food and Commercial Workers union web site at. http://www.ufcw.org/your_industry/retail/industry_news/index.cfm the second was a article by the Los Angelis Times at. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi- and lastly from wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safeway_Inc.
